Big band tunes coming to Taber Park Saturday

Family picnics begin at 6 p.m.

“Bye Bye Love,” “Blue Skies,” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo” recall sounds from the Big Band Era.

The first “Music Under the Stars” concert of the season in Urbanna this Saturday, May 16, in Taber Park will feature a program of big band music. Jan Williams and “The Little Big Band,” a trio of musicians, will perform favorite standards, big band, and swing music from the 1920s through the 2000s. This unique group achieves these sounds with electronics by using computer sequencing and digital recordings to replicate the instruments of a big band.

While the band will play at 7 p.m., family picnics will begin at 6 p.m. in Taber Park. All families are encouraged to bring picnics. The family picnic setting considered “the most appealing” will receive a prize, presented during the intermission of the performance. Taste Gourmet Foods on Virginia Street donated the prize for this event.

“Music Under the Stars” is one of the special events sponsored by the Urbanna Business Association and the cost of this concert has been underwritten by donations from citizens wishing to bring the people of the community together for an evening of family entertainment. Donations will be accepted at the concert.

Since this is a family-oriented event, no alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Bring lawn chairs and/or blankets.

A “Music Under the Stars” concert is planned for each month from May to September. Any funds raised beyond what is needed to underwrite the cost of these events will go toward a pavilion in the park as a permanent bandstand.

The Special Events Committee of the Urbanna Business Association is a group of volunteers interested in seeing that Urbanna retains the old-fashioned flavor of a small port town. The committee is always looking for additional volunteers and information is available from Jennifer Millington at 758-9100.

The second concert and picnic will be June 20 with Keith Anderson and his jazz sax.

Community support of all the special events will ensure they will be available in the future.
