Bayside Youth Ballet to present Spring Gala
On Sunday, May 21, Bayside Youth Ballet (BYB) will present its Spring Gala, “Celebrating the Classics and the Contemporary,” at 2 p.m. in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School. Dancers from Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex and West Point will perform excerpts from the classical ballet Coppelia, one of the most popular ballets of the 19th century, composed by Leo Delibes. The piece, set in a European village, includes a lively Mazurka and a lighthearted section exploring friendship. Guest dancers will be joining the ballet company in this section of the performance.
As a tribute to Broadway, the dancers will also present “Shoeless Joe” from Damn Yankees, “Manson Trio” from Pippin, as well as the popular “Prince Ali” from Aladdin, currently on Broadway. On a recent trip to New York City, BYB dancers attended the Broadway production of Aladdin and participated in a master class with Disney choreographers.
Also included in the program of jazz, classical ballet, modern, and musical theater are performances to the rock sounds of Queen and a piece by a Welsh composer based on J.S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier.” It is a unique blend of classical music with pop beats.
This varied program will include performances by BYB alumni, as well as favorite selections from the company’s repertoire, demonstrating the versatility of the company dancers.
Tickets for this celebration are $12 for adults and $7 for children under age 10, and are available at the Mathews Visitor Center and Diggs School of Dance in Gloucester, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 694-5900 for more information.
Bayside Youth Ballet is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that presents full-length ballets and lecture demonstrations to area private and public schools and to community groups. BYB will hold auditions for membership on Saturday, June 3, at Diggs School of Dance in Gloucester. All dancers, regardless of their studio affiliation, are invited to participate.
