For the first time, the Rappahannock Art League is partnering with both Rappahannock Community College and Tides Inn resort in Irvington to produce “Art Retreat on the River: Wild About Art.”

From Monday, June 1, through Thursday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., four separate art workshops will run concurrently at the Tides Inn in a waterfront atmosphere of beauty, creativity and fun. Participants get to choose one of the four workshops, and immerse themselves in art along the shores of Carters Creek with a clear view to the Rappahannock River.

Instructors include internationally-known artist/teacher Pat Cook, and Rappahannock Art League workshop instructors Johnny Johnson, Kathleen Noffsinger and Mary Jo Beswick.

There are two separate ways to participate in the art retreat. Participants may be “day students” and register for the workshops alone. To register for this option, call 758-6750 or 333-6828, or email or

Workshops given by Johnson, Noffsinger and Beswick are $210 apiece for day students for the entire four days. The workshop given by Cook is $335.

For those who want to spend the night, The Tides Inn offers an all-inclusive package, which features the art retreat workshop of your choice, nightly accommodations, some meals, and a gala reception. For more information and prices, visit tidesinn.com. To register for the entire package, call 438-5000.

The Tides Inn is located at 480 King Carter Drive, Irvington.

Workshops given by Johnson, Noffsinger and Beswick are designed for students from all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.

Cook’s workshop is for the slightly more advanced beginner to the advanced artist.

Upon registration, participants will be sent a “supply list” of art supplies to purchase before the workshop.

This program is partially supported by a grant from the Kellogg Foundation to the Rappahannock Art League. The Rappahannock Art League (RAL) is located at 19 N. Main Street in Kilmarnock. The RAL can be contacted at 436-9309, or visit http://www.ralgallery.com.
