‘A story of love and trust’
by Larry S. Chowning
Minnie Kirby Burch of Water View loves animals!
It was September 16, 2010 that a squirrel nest fell from a tree and one of the babies landed in Minnie’s heart.
“I’m a school bus driver and had just parked the bus when I heard what I thought was a bird in trouble,” she said. “I soon discovered the baby bird I had come to save was actually a baby squirrel that had fallen from its nest.”
Minnie took the little squirrel into her life and allowed it to live in her home. From their experiences together Minnie wrote and published a new children’s book, “The Adventures of Squir Squirrel—A Story of Love and Trust.”
“I’m a country, farm girl and I grew up loving animals,” she said. “The short time he lived with us he taught me so much about love and trust.”
The book carries the reader through the loving and sharing journey of Squir Squirrel and the Burches and how they co-habitated together in their home. Minnie’s husband Ray built the squirrel a home of its own, “a squirrel condominium,” he said.
When the squirrel died, Minnie wrote the book out of love. The book is 61 pages with many photographs of Squir Squirrel doing things around the house.
Minnie will be selling her book on Friday of the Urbanna Oyster Festival on Rappahannock Avenue near the foundation’s communication center. She also will hold a book signing on Sunday, November 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Urbanna Firehouse on Virginia Street in Urbanna. The book sells for $25.
