39th annual Mathews Market Days set for Sept. 6-7

The public is invited to visit the Courthouse Green in the heart of Mathews County on Friday, September 6, and Saturday, September 7, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for the 39th annual Mathews Market Days.

Also, on Saturday from 8-11 p.m. the public is invited to the annual Street Dance on the corner of Brickbat Road and Court Street. Admission and parking are free.

On Saturday only, shuttle bus transportation will be available at no cost from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The bus will pick up at Lee Jackson/Thomas Hunter Middle School (Church Street/Route 611) and at Mathews High School (Buckley Hall Road/Route 198) and stop at the corner of Court Street and Church Street. This is also a designated area for handicap loading and unloading. 

Street closures have been approved in the courthouse area, which include but not limited to the following: Route 1003, Route 1002 Court Street and Route 1001 Brickbat Road from September 5 at 12:01 a.m. through September 8 at 5 p.m. 

Mathews Market Days will be sporting new banners this year, directing visitors to the Spelling Bee Contest and the Classic Cruisers Show and Shine Car Show. Also look for the eye-catching 6-foot-tall blue and white banners with the Market Days logo.

Poster Sales
Members of the Mathews Market Days Committee will be on hand to answer any questions visitors may have during the two days. The 2013 Market Days Poster, a limited edition, signed/numbered collectable art print, will be on sale for $25. After Market Days, they will be sold for $35. In addition, some Vintage Market Day Posters will be on sale at the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center. All proceeds from the sales are returned to the Mathews community in the form of grant funds.

On display under a tent next to the monument will be all entries of the craft and homemade products fair. 

Craft Booth
More than 90 booths will display local art and crafts, including wooden bird and fish carvings, hand-woven items, glass art, children’s toys and puzzles, baskets, hooked rugs, handmade books and boxes, soaps, nautical art, jewelry, home-baked breads and cakes, pottery and the traditional home crafts such as embroidery, knitting and sewing and so much more! 

Food Court
Throughout both days the food court, adjacent to the Court Green, will offer tempting food items such as: seafood, burgers/dogs, barbecue, deep-fried Oreos, fried donuts, baked goods, funnel cakes, pork skins, kettle korn, ice cream and many locally-made products. 

Art Show/Sale
The Mathews Art Group’s Annual Art Show and Sale will again take place on Main Street with more than 30 local artists displaying and selling their work. Enjoy walking through the many talented artists booths and speaking with them personally for a very special treat in a relaxing atmosphere. Visit for more information.
