The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will kick off the 12th annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup season with an appearance in Richmond at SunTrust Bank on May 6 by Gary Jobson. Jobson, a world-class sailor, television commentator and author, titles his presentation “Sailing: Speed and Passion.”

Topics will include the 2009 12-Meter World Championship, the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, US Sailing Team’s highlights of the Beijing Olympic Games, and long distance racing—the Chicago to Mackinac Race, the Volvo Ocean Race, the Bermuda Race, and the Transatlantic Challenge.

Jobson will present two special features on classic yachts and his recent expedition to Antarctica.

An inspirational speaker and cancer survivor, Jobson is also the national Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Honorary Chair for the Leukemia Cup Regattas.

This event is open to the public on Thursday, May 6, at 6 p.m. at the SunTrust Corporate Office at 919 E. Main Street, 24th Floor, in downtown Richmond. Free parking in the SunTrust parking garage is available. Admission is $25 per person and includes wine, beer and heavy hors d’oeuvres. A similar event featuring Gary Jobson was a sell-out several years ago, so please RSVP by contacting Laura Boone at 804-627-0400 or .

SunTrust Bank is repeating as a presenting sponsor of the Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta.

In other Leukemia Cup news, this year’s exciting event calendar is now finalized. One change is that the auction and gala will be sited at the Stingray Harbour Yacht Club in Deltaville, while racing activities will still be based at the Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville. Both of the clubs are co-sponsoring the Leukemia Cup Regatta.

Another change is that the Kayak Tour moves to Bay Trail Outfitters in Mathews County. The full schedule is shown below.

  • May 1—Kayak Tour at Bay Trail Outfitters in Mathews.
  • June 4—Arts on Fishing Bay at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.
  • June 24–Junior Sail-A-Thon at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.
  • July 9—Auction at Stingray Harbour Yacht Club.
  • July 10-11—The Regatta at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.

Fund Raising

Proceeds from all Leukemia Cup activities benefit efforts to combat blood cancers, and each sailor who raises funds through their participation in the regatta is eligible to win prizes from national sponsors. Top fundraisers win a Fantasy Sail with Gary Jobson at the 2010 Fantasy Sail off the coast of Charleston, SC.

Past fundraising has been extremely successful. Judy Buis, co-chair of the event, reports that last year “we were one of the top fund-raising Leukemia Cup Regattas in the country.”

Carolyn Schmalenberger, the event’s other co-chair, is heartened that “researchers are making great progress in developing therapeutic vaccines for blood cancer.”

Schmalenberger added, “Our fund-raising efforts are helping to make this progress possible. When I consider the new hope for patients stricken with a blood cancer, I am passionately aware that now our hard work to raise money will also assist in research that may actually prevent certain types of cancer.”
