Paddle boarding: quietly explore the water
imageJack Banks and his son Hunter built a wooden stand-up paddle board at their home in Wake. The board glides easily, pushed by a long paddle and the leverage of using your whole body. By standing, the paddler has a good view into the water and surroundings. The board draws about 8 inches of water, allowing nearly silent access to shallow water.

RI Academy alumni to hold banquet meeting
imageThis annual event celebrates the history and legacy of the RI Academy, a church-run school for African-Americans that operated from 1902 to 1948. A special feature of this year’s event will be a round table discussion in which alumni of the school will share their recollections of school days.

Another juvenile osprey rescued on Jackson Creek
imageThe osprey, which appeared alert and healthy, had probably been on its first flight, said Mrs. Bode, who explained there are 6 osprey nests in front of their house. Judging by the debris in the hot tub, the bird had been stranded for at least 24 hours, she said.
