Celebrating a way of life through art
imageWilliam Henry Clarke is a folk artist with a mission. Baptized in a muddy pond in Nottoway County, he spent his youth watching the traditions of black southerners slowly ebb away. His paintings capture the stories and images of his childhood and celebrate a way of life that only exists in people’s memory.

First Working Waterman’s Weekend pleases officials
imageMuseum officials estimated about 2,000 people visited the museum and park. “I thought it was a really unusual affair,” said museum president Bob Kates. “It’s the first time we have honored our local watermen in this way, and I think it’s a stepping stone for a greater event in the future.”

End of an era: P&P Produce closes
imageThe recent closing of P&P Produce in Saluda is just about the final chapter in a long and colorful era of general country stores in Middlesex County. Just a half century ago, small country stores speckled the countryside, from Laneview to Stingray Point, and across the county from the Piankatank to the Rappahannock rivers.
