Maritime Museum now has over 1,000 members
The Deltaville Maritime Museum held its annual membership meeting Saturday with president Robert (Bob) Kates presiding. Kates reported that the museum membership has increased to 1,074 due to the efforts of Lynn Burnette and Chuck McGhinnis, who have worked hard to bring old members back.
Urbanna man authors book on Haiti
When Stan Hovey of Urbanna lived in Haiti 65 years ago, 60 percent of the original forest was there—now only about 2 percent remains. Hovey’s fond memories of the island nation sparked him to write a book, “Haitian Recollections And Haitian Returns.”
Oyster Festival Queen & Spat to be crowned Nov. 5
The selection of the Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen is a long-standing tradition that dates back to 1960, the year before Urbanna Days became the Urbanna Oyster Festival. The first Festival Queen was crowned on a flatbed trailer on the day of the festival.
Habitat begins $20,000 fund-raising campaign
Millard Fuller (1935-2009), the founder of Habitat For Humanity (HFH) International, was often heard to say: “I’ve tried it both ways: I’ve tried not asking for money; and I’ve tried asking. And it is funny, but I get more when I ask!” In the spirit of our founder, Habitat-Middlesex is asking.
