There is a new voice on the American literary scene and it speaks with an eastern Virginia accent The voice belongs to Belle Boggs, who grew up in King William County, attended Virginia Commonwealth University, and earned a master of fine arts degree in fiction writing from the University of California at Irvine.
‘Flashback’ to perform at Crab Feast in Deltaville
The annual Lower Middle-sex Volunteer Fire Department Crab Feast will be held at the Deltaville Firehouse on Saturday, August 7, from 5 p.m. to midnight. The ticket includes all the steamed crabs one can eat, plus hamburgers, hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob. The food will be served from 5 to 8 p.m.
Paddle boarding: quietly explore the water
Jack Banks and his son Hunter built a wooden stand-up paddle board at their home in Wake. The board glides easily, pushed by a long paddle and the leverage of using your whole body. By standing, the paddler has a good view into the water and surroundings. The board draws about 8 inches of water, allowing nearly silent access to shallow water.
RI Academy alumni to hold banquet meeting
This annual event celebrates the history and legacy of the RI Academy, a church-run school for African-Americans that operated from 1902 to 1948. A special feature of this year’s event will be a round table discussion in which alumni of the school will share their recollections of school days.
