Carpe Diem to perform in Mathews March 18

Massive, locally grown turnip

Retired educator sings the songs of his first job
imageSmith never forgot his days on a menhaden boat. In 2001, he became a member of the “Northern Neck Chantey Singers,” a group dedicated to preserving the work songs of the menhaden fishing industry. This group, all of whom are former menhaden fishermen, sings the work songs, called chanteys, that the men sang to make the back-breaking work go easier.

Parks to unveil new book with Essex Library Friends
Award-winning mystery author Brad Parks will celebrate the premier of his latest novel, “The Girl Next Door,” with the Friends of the Essex Public Library at Hobbs Hole Restaurant in Tappahannock on March 13—the first day the book will be available to the general public.
