Fire chief reflects on 34-year career
January 1, 2010 marked the end of an era as Bill Thrift stepped down after 34 years of service as chief of the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department of Urbanna. Thrift recalls his first or second year with the company. The firemen went to fight a furnace fire on Taylor Avenue.
Christmas Friends has another successful season
Christmas Friends Inc. had another successful year thanks to a generous community that donated money and time. In its 24th year, the gift-giving program helped 171 children and 129 senior adults who met strict guidelines for need.
Hands Across Middlesex plan gala with Kiwanis
Tickets are now on sale for the Middlesex Kiwanis-Hands Across Middlesex Gala at the Bethpage Community Center near Urbanna on Saturday, March 20, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $50 for an individual, $90 for a couple, $350 for a table of 8.
Area artists to be featured at Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society Auction
More than 30 local and regional artists have signed on to create original centerpieces for the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society Annual Auction. The auction is the Humane Society’s largest annual fundraiser for the operations budget and will be held January 30 at 6 p.m. at the Abingdon Ruritan Center in Bena.
