Payne brothers named Oyster Festival captains
Brothers Ed and Jonesey Payne of Urbanna have been named captains of the 53rd annual Urbanna Oyster Festival set for Friday and Saturday, November 5-6. The men of Tangier were some of the most astute commercial fishermen on the Bay, and they brought that expertise to Urbanna.

As the Oyster Festival evolved over the years, so has the selection process for the Queen and Little Miss Spat. It originally was a type of beauty pageant, but is now a scholarship competition for the Queen contestants.
Deadrise ‘Miss Ruth’ donated to Maritime Museum
Miss Ruth was run as a charter fishing boat by Captain Harrow until 2007. Captain Harrow has been a waterman since his teens and has held his captain’s license for over 50 years. During his career he has been an oysterman, crabber, yacht captain, deadrise boat builder, carpenter and charter boat captain.
Rabies clinics planned
The Three Rivers Health District reminds the public to “Protect the Ones You Love. Vaccinate Your Pets.” This important message is the focus of this year’s Rabies Awareness Week, which is being observed through October 3.
