Deltaville music, dinner & dance tickets on sale
Tickets for the 2012 “Groovin’ in the Park” music series and the opening weekend Shrimp and Barbecue Dinner and Dance are now on sale at Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park. Tickets are available by mail, at the museum office, or Nauti Nell’s in Deltaville.
Carpe Diem to perform in Mathews March 18
America’s premiere “indie” ensemble, Carpe Diem String Quartet, will share its acclaimed innovation and flair at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, at Mathews High School, 9889 Buckley Hall Road, Mathews. Tickets are $25 at the door.
Massive, locally grown turnip
Jimmy Hogge of Church View displays the seven-pound turnip he grew in his home garden. Hogge sells his turnips at a farmers’ market in Washington, D.C., but most are much smaller than the whopper here, he said.
Retired educator sings the songs of his first job
Smith never forgot his days on a menhaden boat. In 2001, he became a member of the “Northern Neck Chantey Singers,” a group dedicated to preserving the work songs of the menhaden fishing industry. This group, all of whom are former menhaden fishermen, sings the work songs, called chanteys, that the men sang to make the back-breaking work go easier.
