Holmes, whose career as an educator began in the 1950s, started as a park ranger in May, 1958. Ironically perhaps, he was a ranger and historical interpreter at the National Historical Monument Birthplace of the famous African American educator Booker T. Washington in Franklin County near Roanoke.

Tour visitors to experience ‘Civil War History along our Waterways’
The Garden Club of the Middle Peninsula will hold its tour of Middlesex County, titled “Civil War History along our Waterways,” on Friday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit Middlesex County during its 2012 Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the Civil War.
‘Rhythm Project’ performs Saturday in Gloucester
