On October 27, 2012, the Zion Branch Baptist Church family gave a surprise appreciation service to honor three of its faithful and strong “cornerstone” women of the church. The honorees were Deaconess Mary “Eunice” Ackes, Sister Gertrude R. Hiers and Sister Delores L. Jones.

Eunice, has served her church faithfully for 74 years. She has been the superintendent of Sunday school for over 25 years and has served as a deaconess for 16 years. She, as well as the other two honorees, have served and sang in their church choir, and with the Inspirational Gospel Chorus and the Voices of Truths. In addition, Sister Eunice sang with the Starlight Gospel Chorus for a number of years.

Sister Gertrude R. Hiers has served as the church clerk for over 46 dedicated years, she has faithfully served her church for 79 years. She also participated in her former church, Millennium Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pa., where she raised money for the Philadelphia Building Fund.

In addition, Gertrude served tirelessly as the church secretary of Sunday school. For 20 years she served as a Watch Care member at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Both Sister Hiers and Sister Ackes have participated and actively supported the Tri-County Literary Union in Middlesex County over the length of their service in their church and have been awarded church perfect attendances and other awards for their services rendered.

Sister Dolores L. Jones has served the church for over 37 years as the church treasurer. Her faithfulness and dedicated service to the church has been for over 44 years. Delores is better known for that beautiful voice as she has rendered it many times all over Middlesex County and other places. She also serves on the Hospitality Ministry and helps prepare foods for all church events.

Each of “these mighty women of God” were awarded a very beautiful Baudville Glass Trophy with the years of service they served, and a DVD that reflects their work in the church. Together, they have served 197 years of faithful and dedicated service to their church and community.
