SRBA black history event set

The 22nd Annual Black History Observance of the Southside Rappahannock Baptist Association (SRBA) will be on Feb. 14 at New Mount Zion Baptist in Walkerton starting at 9 a.m.

The service will include an opening breakfast followed by an inward look at history within the SRBA as a functioning body for more than 130 years.

Three senior pastors, who have also been moderators, have been invited to come and give their historical perspectives. They are Rev. Linwood Jones, pastor of Saint John Baptist Church in Essex County; Rev. Robert Brown, pastor of New Mount Zion in King and Queen County; and Rev. Fred Holmes, pastor of Antioch and Mount Zion Baptist churches in Middlesex County.

In addition, Lillian H. McGuire, association historian, will give highlights, and Rev. Woodland Holmes, moderator, will also share highlights of the planned SRBA library, including how SRBA will use technology to enhance its historical connectivity.

SRBA also will honor and recognize any of the church members who will become 100 years old or more in 2009. Anyone born before or in the year 1909 would be a candidate for recognition. If these individuals cannot be present, a family member or church should be prepared to stand in for them and present their profile.

For more information, contact a member of the program committee—Deacon Percy Pollard, Diane Johnson, Linda Scott, Deacon Conrad Hundley and Mary Gaskins.
