Harmony Grove’s 150th anniversary is on Sunday

Brownie Blevins of St. Stephens Church readies the reins of “Lisa” as Betty Kennon checks out the carriage in preparation for Sunday’s 150th anniversary celebration at Harmony Grove Baptist Church.

On Sunday, June 21, at 10 a.m., Harmony Grove Baptist Church at the intersections of Route 3 and Route 33 in Topping will conclude the celebration of its 150th anniversary.

Dr. Roger Collier and Pastor Terry Sharpe will arrive in a horse-driven carriage with Brownie Blevins at the reins of “Lisa,” and the pastors dressed in period clothing “for the preachers of that day.” They will be joined by Pastor Edward Harrow Sr. who will arrive on horseback with the carriage.

The worship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the call to worship by the Chancel Choir. The Harmony Ringers Bell Choir will perform “Shining Bright,” and the former Harmony Grove Gospel Singers will sing and play “ He Touched Me” and “Somebody Loves Me.”

The children will take part in the service with God’s Cherub Choir singing a “Jesus Loves Me Medley” followed by God’s Children’s Choir singing “Everywhere” from the musical “Livin Inside Out in an Upside Down World.”

The Chancel Choir will present “ Let the Flame Burn Brightly.” A message of heritage and hope will be brought to us by both Pastors Collier and Sharpe.

Former Pastors Dave Pouchot (1974-1977), Dennis Tucker (1977-1990), Chet Smith (2000-2001) and Edward Harrow Sr. (2004-2007) will be recognized during the celebration service as well as invited guests and representatives of Harmony Grove’s mother and daughter churches.

Following the service, a luncheon will be served in the fellowship hall with seating both inside the church and outside on the grounds under the tent or at tables under the trees.

At 1 p.m. there will be a ceremony to plant new oak trees on the grounds as well as the closing of the time capsule.

There will be a table set up with memorabilia as well as a table displaying the 150th anniversary articles that will be for sale: a 150th Anniversary Print denoting the three churches of Harmony Grove; the pictorial directory; the cookbook: the gold church Christmas ornament: and the china plate. Anyone who would like one of these but cannot attend the celebration, please call the church office at 758-5154 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday to reserve a favorite memento of this occasion.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
