Hands Across Middlesex: More Sponsors Needed
by Toni Ewell
A great big “thank-you” to the twenty-some individuals and organizations that have become BackPack Buddy sponsors with their donations to the program. Each Friday during the school year Hands will pack and deliver approximately 135 backpacks filled with a weekend supply of food to be distributed to elementary and middle school students who are chosen to participate in this program by school administrators.
Now, you can do the math—more sponsors are needed to underwrite the program for the 2012-13 school year. It costs about $200 per BackPack Buddy student for the entire school year. So, please get out your checkbook and send a check made payable to Hands with BackPack Buddy on the memo line and mail it to Hands, P.O. Box 85, Locust Hill, VA 23092.
After you send your individual check, get your Sunday school class, bridge club, circle, men’s group or any organization you belong to, to send a check as well. No child in Middlesex County should go home from school on the weekend to a house without adequate food.
The regular Tuesday food distributions days in September will be September 11 for families of three or more and September 25 for families with fewer than three. The Clothing Closet will be open in September to eligible clients on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Yard sales will be held every Saturday in September, with the Cryer Center and the Kiwanis Club joining together to conduct these special yard sales. Proceeds will be split between the Kiwanis, for their scholarship fund, and Hands and Habitat for their respective programs. Watch the sign in front of the Cryer Center for more information about these special sales. Lots of inventory will be needed to make these sales successful, so get all that old, but still-good stuff and bring it to the Cryer Center during office hours, Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donate furniture, appliances, boats, cars, lawn equipment, and everything else that you no longer need but could be prized by someone else.
