Hands Across Middlesex

by Cathy Newcomb

Hands had an exciting meeting on March 15 at Clarksbury United Methodist Church in Deltaville. Thanks so much to the folks there for hosting us.

Our fantastic news is that we have a signed contract for our new location. This new venue will be shared with Habitat for Humanity. We also hope to house an office for the Red Cross.

The site is a 6.5-acre lot on Route 33 near Harmony Village, just west of the stoplight. The footprint for our new building will be 10,000 square feet.

We have submitted an application for rezoning and are looking forward to approval. The schedule for the public hearings, which will be held at the Historic Courthouse in Saluda, is as follows: April 9 at 7 p.m., and April 21 at 7:30 p.m. The first meeting is to review the plan. The second is for final approval. These are public meetings and anyone interested in attending is welcome. Your support would be most appreciated.

There are no words to express how grateful members of the organization(s) are to the gentleman who has been so generous in this effort to help us relocate and grow. The new housing will mean that Hands Across Middlesex and Habitat for Humanity will be able to serve the community much more efficiently. “Thank you” seems like too little to say.

Judi Wendell would like the community members to know that our Furniture Barn is depleted again. As you know, there have been many fires in the area lately and many families have needed assistance. While doing your spring cleaning, please keep us in mind. Judi’s new number is 758-2965.

She was overwhelmed with gratitude for the community response the last time a request for household items, appliances and furniture was made. Many people responded and many families were helped. Thank you.

Judi also wants you to know that we have two hospital beds at this time. If you or someone you know is in need of a hospital bed, please let her know.

Hands Across Middlesex is a 501-C nonprofit organization located at Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville. The phone number is: 776-8535. The mailing address is: P.O. Box 1299, Saluda, VA 23149. Our meetings are held the third Sunday of each month at 3:30 p.m. Our April meeting will be held at the Church of the Visitation on Route 33, Topping. Please bring a canned good to this meeting as a donation to the Food Bank.
