Christ Church to celebrate Pentecost

On Sunday, May 23, Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) in Christchurch will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost at both the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services.

In the Jewish Scriptures (Old Testament), the Feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) is a celebration of the giving of new life through the Law, the Torah, and comes 50 days after Passover. In the Christian Scriptures (New Testament), the Feast of Pentecost comes 50 days after the Feast of the Resurrection (Easter) and celebrates the giving of new life in Christ through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Feast of Pentecost is often considered to be the birthday of the church.

Worshippers are encouraged to wear something red representing the Pentecost flames of fire which represent the coming of the Holy Spirit.
