‘Christ and Culture’ begins May 5 at Philippi Church
“It seems to me that the question of how the church should relate to society, and particularly to the political sphere, is one of the big debates of our time,” said Mike Cook, pastor of Philippi Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Deltaville. “Niebuhr’s great classic seems to me to be a perfect tool for Christians to discuss it.”
Cook is talking about “Christ and Culture,” written in 1951 by the well-known theologian, H. Richard Niebuhr.
In a review in the New York Times, Tom Hutchinson said, “Mr. Niebuhr distinguishes five typical answers to the Christian’s problem of setting the relations between the Christ he calls Lord and the culture which holds him as the sea holds its fish.”
The discussion group will meet Wednesday evenings beginning May 5 at 7 p.m. at Philippi. Reading the book is not required, but participants are welcome to order one if they desire. Call Philippi at 776-6230 to register.
