Benefit auction set for Saturday at golf course

Mardi Gras is over for 2010, but a mission team from Lower United Methodist Church will keep the celebration alive for a little longer this weekend. Team members have planned a fund-raising event for Saturday, February 20, in the Piankatank River Golf Club clubhouse at Hartfield from 4 to 6 p.m.

The main feature of the event is a silent auction, which includes gift certificates to restaurants and other businesses; art work; a gas grill; antiques; a handmade quilt and other handmade items. All purchase payments must be by cash or check. Refreshments will be provided through the generosity of supporters from the church and community. Beverages also will be available for purchase.

The mission team travels to New Orleans April 17-24, with 10 to 12 members. Team leader Rev. Janine Howard said they do not yet know exactly where they will be assigned. She has worked in the Lower Ninth Ward and Upper Ninth Ward on other similar trips.

In addition to the fund-raising aspect of the auction, Rev. Howard said, “It helps maintain awareness about the ongoing needs in New Orleans. Publicity related to the Saints’ win in the Super Bowl has provided a perfect opportunity for us to tell people about the task of re-building a city, homes and lives.”

Additionally, Howard said, “We want to offer everyone a means to participate in mission work, even if they cannot travel with us to New Orleans.”

Photos of previous trips will be displayed.
