It appeared the Toyota pick-up sustained the bulk of the damage.

A Toyota pick-up and a Chevrolet Express work van collided on Route 33 near the Hartfield Post Office at about 5:26 p.m. Monday. The Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department, Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad of Deltaville and Virginia State Police responded to the scene.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but according to State Police Sgt. Mathias both vehicles were traveling eastbound. The pick-up overturned as a result of the collision and came to rest on its tires, facing the opposite direction. The driver of the truck was transported to Hummel Field in Topping where he was then airlifted to MCV, “but the driver of the van refused care,” said fireman Wil George.

Debris was scattered across both lanes of Route 33 and traffic was stopped in both directions on Route 33. Traffic was detoured around the crash on Grafton Church Road.

More details, including video footage of the wreckage, will be posted soon.
