Single-vehicle accident claims life of teenager

A Christchurch School student was killed Friday night in a one-vehicle accident on Bluff Point Road about a half-mile west of Prentice Creek Road in Northumberland County.

Ryan Mitchell Wilcox, 17, of Kilmarnock was pronounced dead at the scene. Virginia State Police said the accident occurred around 9 p.m. A preliminary investigation by police found that Wilcox was traveling east on Bluff Point Road when he lost control of his 1998 GMC Sierra pickup and swerved off the road and hit a tree. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police.

“The vehicle appeared to swerve to the right side of the road. It clipped a mailbox and then veered back across the roadway and went off the left side of the road and hit the tree,” said Trooper Troy Smith.

The son of Kyle and Kenneth Bransford of Kilmarnock, Wilcox was an junior at Christchurch School in Christchurch.

Ryan Mitchell Wilcox, 17, of Kilmarnock died December 12, 2008 from injuries suffered in a car accident near his home the same night.

He was a student and member of the crew team at Christchurch School, a junior member of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department, member of Boy Scout Troop 242 and an avid hunter.

Surviving are his mother and father, Kyle and Kenneth Bransford; grandparents, Kay and Thomas Carroll Somers of White Stone; brother, Eric Bransford and wife Molly of Richmond; sister, Bridget Morgan and husband Mark of High Point, N.C.; nieces, Caroline and Grace Morgan, and Carter Bransford; uncles and aunts, Eric and Margaret Nost, and Paul and Beth Somers, all of White Stone, and John and Mary Bransford, P.K. and Wenda Bransford, Sean and Karen Malone, and Tim and Lynn Bransford, all of Newport News; and two cousins, Laura and Foster Nost.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, at Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Kilmarnock. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 15, at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.
