Rabid raccoon killed in Saluda

A rabid raccoon was killed by a Saluda-area man after his dog came in contact with the raccoon on Monday, March 8, reported Middlesex Animal Control Chief Officer Ricky Warren.

The doberman pincher was chained and the owner heard a commotion and then saw the dog and raccoon together.

The dog’s vaccinations were up to date, so all the dog needs is a rabies booster shot, said Warren. It will be quarantined for 45 days.

“It doesn’t matter what time of year, rabies is out there,” said Warren, who reminds pet owners to check the rabies vaccination records of their pets.

Warren said animal control will be checking vaccinations because rabies “can be a matter of life and death for your pet.”
