Fire destroyed an outbuilding behind a home on Mason’s Cove Lane in Topping at 11 a.m. Friday, October 16, reported Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) Chief Alan Blake.

Blake said the fire probably originated from a wood stove in the outbuilding, which was used by the owner as a woodworking shop.

Both the HVFD and Lower Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department of Deltaville responded to the blaze along with the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad. The outbuilding and contents were a total loss, said Blake.

“The building was totally engulfed when we arrived,” said Blake.  “There wasn’t anything we could do to save the building and contents.  We were more concerned about keeping it away from the home that was 200 feet away.”
