Middlesex to open shelters
The Middlesex County Director of Emergency Services declared a State of Emergency for Middlesex County at 1 p.m. due to the approach of Hurricane Hanna to the area.
A temporary public shelter will open at 8 p.m. tonight, September 5, at Middlesex Elementary School on 823 Philpot Road, Locust Hill.
A shelter for “Special Needs Citizens” will be available at the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center at 170 Oakes Landing Road, Saluda.
Citizens are reminded that pets, weapons, alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are not allowed in the shelters. Smoking will not be allowed in the shelters.
People with shelter or storm questions should contact the county’s emergency information office at 758-4715.
Citizens are encouraged to bring the following items to the shelter:
- Valuable papers such as driver’s license or other identification, bank books, insurance policies, property inventory and photographs.
- Medications, prescriptions, important medical information, eyeglasses, cleaning solution for contact lenses, hearing aids, and walking aids.
- Toiletries and sanitary supplies.
- Quiet games for children.
- Flashlight with extra batteries.
- Blanket or sleeping bag for each person and pillows.
Before you leave your home:
- Unplug all electrical appliances and machines and store them as high as possible.
- Turn off electricity at all breakers plus the main switch. Label breakers to identify what the lines carry.
- Store toxic materials as high as possible in the most protected area available.
- Agree with family members on a location to meet or a means of reaching one another with messages in the event you become separated.
