A fire that started at about 3:30 a.m. destroyed 21 boats and several structures at Dozier Yachting Center on Urbanna Creek in Urbanna on Monday, February 29, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Police say two people who lived aboard boats in the marina have died.

Numerous area fire departments, Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Virginia State Police, Coast Guard Station Milford Haven, Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, a Coast Guard incident management team, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and a Newport News HAZMAT team responded to the scene.

Police said the fire was under control at about 7:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard sent a 45-foot response boat from Station Milford Haven to establish a safety zone at the scene.

The lead agency in the investigation of the fire is the Virginia State Police.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to The Residences at Oyster Harbor condominiums, which are located next to the marina.
