• 4-H Camp
Each year more than 26,000 youth ages 5 to 18 participate in 4-H camping at one of the six Virginia 4-H Educational Centers. “4-H camps help children to begin to realize their full potential in the areas of leadership and various skills,” said Barry Garst, director of evaluation for the American Camping Association and a former Virginia 4-H specialist. “Although campers learn traditional camp activities like swimming and environmental education, the most important things that children learn at 4-H camp is how to take care of themselves and how to develop positive relationships with others.” The camping philosophy in Virginia 4-H is dedicated to the positive individual development of youth through experiential learning. A study conducted of 11,000 youth campers found that 4-H camp participation helped youth learn to make new friends, develop new skills, and become more independent and take care of themselves. A study of parents of 4-H campers found that they believed 4-H changed their child’s behaviors concerning, taking care of their own things, becoming more independent and taking initiative, and sharing. All six of Virginia 4-H camps are accredited by the American Camping Association. A child does not need to be a member of 4-H to attend 4-H camp. “Attending camp is a great experience for youth because it makes them focus on who they are away from their comfort zone. The experience often provides them with valuable skills and knowledge that helps them grow immensely in just a few short days, “said Garst. Middlesex Junior 4-H Camp is now accepting applications for the 2008 Junior Camp to be held June 30-July 4 at the Jamestown 4-H Center. Call the Extension Office at 758-4120 for a registration form nad more information.
