Rev. Townsend to preach
Sunday at Saluda Baptist

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, Tyler, Jennifer, Madeline, Alexis and Leah Townsend will be honored guests at a continental breakfast reception in the Saluda Baptist Church fellowship hall from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Following Sunday school, Rev. Townsend will be the guest preacher at the 11 a.m. worship service. The public is invited to attend.

Rev. Townsend was Saluda Baptist’s pastor from 1996 to 2003 before relocating to Raleigh, N.C., where he is now working toward a PhD in adult education at NC State University. Jennifer is a sixth grade teacher at Martin Middle School. Their daughters were all born during their ministry at Saluda.




Rev. Chilton returns

Harmony Grove Baptist Church, Topping, had a supper Saturday for Rev. Charles Chilton, who impacted the lives of area young people when he served as pastor at Harmony Grove Baptist from 1960-64.  Some of those youth, now 45 years older,  gathered on Saturday to exchange memories of those happy times and to thank  Rev. Chilton  and his wife Faye for their guidance during the teen years.  Those in attendance (above) at the covered-dish supper  included:  Betty Lou Wright, Robert Miller, Ellen Johnson Brooke, Carolyn Johnson Major, Jean Revere Dunn, Russell Sibley, Becky Mayo Sibley, Anne Miller Waters, Barbara Miller Filling, William Wright, George M. Snead Jr., Barbara Lawson Jenkins, Ann Fears Leigh, Mary Fears Mercer, Evelyna Fears Lawson, John Mercer, Phebe Stoddard Hyde, Walter Lawson, Hilda Colley Taylor and Beth Pettus Maxwell.  Not pictured are  Paula Revere and Mary Revere Allen.



Methodist women offer scholarships

The Rappahannock District United Methodist Women has established a scholarship fund for the 2008 fall semester at Rappahannock Community College to help ethnic minority women who wish to pursue a nursing education.

The scholarship offers one $750 CNA scholarship and $1,000 LPN scholarship. Applications are on file at the college, local nursing homes and area high schools. Applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2008. Applicants must be a resident of Essex, King and Queen, West Point, Richmond, Middlesex, Gloucester, Mathews, Westmoreland, Northumberland and Lancaster.
